## The premise

The Hollow Lantern Library hires a new night keeper every few months. Nobody says what happened to the last one. You keep the rounds from midnight to six for five nights: return the books, light the reading lamps, lock the archive, and find the tapes the last keeper left behind. On your first day, Mrs. Vale asks your name for the ledger and you say it out loud. Later, in the dark, something says it back to you.

## How the microphone works

- The Listener is blind and hunts by sound: footsteps, creaking doors, dropped objects, and your own voice through your microphone.
- Walking is quiet; running is loud. The rules of the shift: walk, don't run; don't drop anything; and whatever you hear, don't answer it.
- The game only measures loudness on your own computer. Your voice is not recorded, uploaded or stored.
- A microphone is optional: No-Mic Mode plays the whole game without one. Streamer Mode lets you talk to your chat.

## Characters

- You: the new night keeper.
- Mrs. Vale: the librarian who hires the keepers and leaves voicemails between shifts.
- The Listener: a tall, blind creature that lives in the stacks, learns your voice and calls you by your name.
- Elias: the keeper before you, who left tapes all over the building.

## The five nights

1. Orientation: learn the rounds.
2. Footsteps: it walks the stacks now.
3. Lights Out: the power is failing.
4. The Archive: whisper, only whisper.
5. Dawn: don't make a sound.
A secret sixth night exists for players who keep every night silent.
